A New Mission
Despite all the good news of the Camino reopening, our Camino for Good family has suffered a great loss. Our friend and co-founder, Bill Austin, passed away suddenly in March 2022, as a result of a scuba diving accident. Although we take comfort knowing that he died doing what he loved, it changes things for our tiny team of pilgrim founders.
The partners of Camino for Good in concert with Bill’s daughters, Mackenzie and Shaylyn, are honoring our friend Bill by creating the Bill Austin Legacy Fund. Bill loved the Camino de Santiago routes, believed the hikes were life changing and loved to try and talk just about anyone into taking a leap of faith and walking one of the routes. We know Bill would want as many of you dreaming of a Camino to go – and so we begin a new phase of our giving mission.

The Camino Francés, or French Way of St. James, is the most popular of the Camino de Santiago routes. Starting in the French village St. Jean Pied de Port, you will travel over the Pyrenees, across Northern Spain and eventually arrive at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the reputed burial place of Apostle St. James.
Camino del Norte
Camino del Norte or Northern Way is one of the oldest ways pilgrims walked to Santiago de Compostela. It winds it way along the northern coast of Spain for almost 500 kilometers, passing through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Get ready for an amazingly beautiful adventure!
Extend your Camino journey beyond Santiago to Finisterre, a small Spanish coastal town that was once believed to be the “end of the world”. This route will lead you west to Finisterre, north along the Atlantic coastline to Muxia, and finally back to Santiago to complete this loop to the End of the World and Back.

What is the Bill Austin Legacy Fund?
The focus of our fundraising efforts shifts to helping those people who want to have a genuine, boots-on-the-ground Camino experience and are facing challenges.
We are starting a need-based pilgrim grant program for expenses related to the Camino de Santiago. If you’re a pilgrim who has a dream of walking the camino, we have a new application process where you can request scholarship funds. This list contains suggested uses of how the funds can be used:
- Travel or transportation
- Gear puchase
- Helper transportation
- Hospitalero training
- Bag transport
How can I support the Bill Austin Legacy Fund and also get fit along the way?
This grant program will be funded by sales of routes on our Camino for Good Virtual Walking App. You can sign up for a monthly subscription of the Buen Camino Experience where you can access all three of our current routes.
On this Buen Camino Experience page, you also have the option to donate to the Legacy Fund if you are not interested in hiking or walking using the app.
For those who knew and loved Bill, we hope this brings comfort knowing that others will be able to walk in his honor and be an ambassador for his dream.
As always, we promise to be transparent and honest.

Just started my virtual hike from St. Jean Pied de Port. So beautiful looking at the Pyrenees mountains. Pushed myself and stopped for the day at Roncesvalles. Amazing pictures, feels like I am there.GaryCalifornia, USA
The virtual experience was very rich! The web-site easy to navigate and full of wonderful content. My favorite was the Camino audio stories from pilgrims who have experienced the Camino in person. They shared personal stories via audio files, and it gave me a real sense of how diverse the Camino experience is – people from across the globe!BettyTennessee, USA
Not only did [the Virtual Camino] provide a focus for my runs, it allowed me to feel like my solitary runs were actual helping someone else in a small way.JackTennessee, USA
